With Spring almost upon us and Easter, Memorial Day, and Summer on the way, have you given thought to where your pet will be when you are away? This deserves thoughtful planning.
Your options include: 1) taking your pet(s) with you, 2) kenneling, 3) family or friends, and 4) hiring a professional pet sitter.
Some hotels are pet-friendly, but call ahead to ask for specific guidelines; for instance, how many pets they allow and any rules they have about pet size and weight. Something they don’t always tell you, but I have found to be true is that they require your pet to be CRATED when you are not in the room.
If your travel includes airflight, most airlines require that your pet stays in cargo, usually with additional fees. Some may allow for your pet to be with you during your flight, but this is probably only available to very small animals, and usually only 1 or 2 per flight (and allocated on a first come, first served basis).
If taking your pets isn’t your cup of tea, kennels are one choice. Be sure to check out any kennel ahead of time! Some offer pens with runs; others do not have runs but have group play areas. Only YOU can determine what will be best for your furkid, for the amount of time you will be away. Verify the operating days and hours of the kennel: you may need to drop off the day before you leave and pick up the day after you return; this can significantly impact work schedule and budget. Many pets experience anxiety in unfamiliar places, but for others, it can actually be enjoyable (think camp!).
Another option you have is leaving your loved one with family or friends. This can work if your pet doesn’t mind new places. And, if you have willing friends or family, inviting them to stay in your home might impact your pet’s routine the least.
Finally, if none of the above works for you, I highly recommend a professional pet sitter! If you choose a pet sitter, your pets remain in their safe and familiar environment, and enjoy their normal routine. Not only do you have a pet sitter, you also have a house sitter. You can leave and return home on your schedule, knowing Fido will be relaxed and happy to see you when you arrive! On Sunday we lost our beloved Grace.
We were not prepared for her sudden departure.
Grace marched to her own drummer.
She made her own way.
What she lacked in stature, she made up with perpetual motion.
and she was always planning her next escape!
Although our home is no longer complete,

her independent spirit lives on in all of us.

Thank you Grace for touching our lives.

We love you

and we miss you.
